'Twigs', 'Huyand', and Beyond: Embracing Diverse Characters in my Career

Written by David Tennant on Sun Jun 30 2024

It has been quite a journey, reflecting on the diverse range of characters I have had the privilege to portray in my career. From the charming demon Crowley in 'Good Omens' to the brooding detective Alec Hardy in 'Broadchurch', each role has brought its own set of challenges and rewards.

One character that particularly stands out to me is Kilgrave from Marvel's 'Jessica Jones'. Playing a villain with mind-control abilities was both thrilling and unsettling. It forced me to delve into dark corners of human nature and explore what drives someone to do unspeakable things. It was a stark departure from my usual sweet, nice persona, but it allowed me to showcase my versatility as an actor.

On the other end of the spectrum, there's Hamlet - a role that every actor dreams of tackling at least once in their career. The complexity and depth of Shakespeare's tragic prince pushed me to new limits emotionally and intellectually. To bring such an iconic character to life on stage was both daunting and exhilarating.

And then there are characters like The Doctor - not just one version, but two! Both the Tenth Doctor and Fourteenth Doctor hold special places in my heart for different reasons. The whimsical eccentricity of Time Lord mixed with moments of profound sadness made playing these roles truly unforgettable experiences.

But beyond individual characters lies something even more important - representation. In recent years, I have been fortunate enough to be part projects like 'Twigs' where diversity is celebrated through storytelling. Giving voice marginalized communities brings about change not only within entertainment industry but society as whole

Embracing diverse characters isn't just about adding variety or challenging myself as an actor; it's about telling stories that matter, shedding light on voices often overlooked or silenced altogether

As I look back on all these roles – past present future – am filled sense gratitude awe At how lucky am do what love And while may never know exactly path will take next can rest assured whatever comes way ready embrace challenge head-on With open arms heart Because at end day That’s what acting all About diving deep into unknown discovering parts ourselves we didn’t even know existed And hopefully along inspiring others same journey too
