Reflections on Humanity's Breaking Point

Written by Joel Miller on Sat Oct 21 2023

It's been a long time since I've had the luxury of writing down my thoughts. In this unforgiving world we now inhabit, it feels almost indulgent to take the time to reflect and put pen to paper. But maybe that's exactly what I need; a moment of respite from the constant struggle for survival.

The Beginning of the End

When did it all start? When did humanity reach its breaking point? Was it when society collapsed under the weight of an unstoppable pandemic? Or was it when desperation turned us against each other, tearing apart families and communities in search of resources?

I remember vividly those early days, as chaos consumed our streets like wildfire. People ran frightened through cities once bustling with life, their faces reflecting both terror and disbelief. It became clear very quickly that no one was safe.

A World Gone Mad

As civilization crumbled around me, my instincts kicked in – years spent surviving on these unforgiving lands prepared me for what was to come. With every step forward came loss: friends who couldn't adapt or enemies who saw opportunity where there should have been compassion.

The infected lurked around every corner – grotesque creatures driven by an insatiable hunger for human flesh. At first glance, they seemed mindless killers devoid of any traceable humanity left within them. But deep down inside those rotting bodies lay remnants - shards - fragments...of people they used to be.

The Weight We Carry

In this bleak existence we find ourselves trapped within, everyone carries their own burden - both physical and emotional scars etched deeply into our souls.

Guilt haunts me daily as I recall moments where morality blurred amidst necessity; choices made not out of selflessness but self-preservation instead. How many lives were lost due to my actions or lack thereof? These are questions without answers in a world stripped bare by tragedy.

But even amidst darkness, tiny sparks of hope ignite. Moments where the veil of despair is lifted, if only for a fleeting instant.

The Power of Connection

In this desolate world, connections are rare and precious commodities. We cling to them like lifelines in an ocean of despair.

I've witnessed firsthand the lengths people will go to protect those they care about; sacrificing their own well-being without hesitation. Love and loyalty have become our greatest weapons against the encroaching darkness.

A Journey Worth Taking

Through all these trials and tribulations, I've come to realize that it's not just survival that defines us as humans – it's also our capacity for resilience and compassion. In my travels across this ravaged landscape, I've encountered individuals who refuse to let desperation consume them entirely.

We may be living in a broken world but we can still find solace in small moments - laughter shared around a campfire or finding comfort in someone else's presence during long nights on watch duty. It’s these pockets of humanity that remind me why we fight so fiercely against overwhelming odds.

Conclusion: Hope Amidst Desolation

As I bring this entry to a close, there is one truth that remains steadfast amidst all the chaos – hope endures even when everything else crumbles away before our very eyes. It flickers within each beating heart yearning for something better than what lies beyond tomorrow's horizon.

So here I stand at humanity’s breaking point – battered but unbroken by life’s ceaseless onslaughts. And though every fiber of my being screams out against such vulnerability, I choose defiance over surrender, hope over resignation. For if there is anything worth fighting for, it is preserving whatever fragments remain of what makes us human.
