Reflections on Being Different

Written by Arlo Beauregard on Tue Apr 23 2024

Hey y'all, it's been a while since I've sat down and really reflected on what it means to be different. Being half-alligator in a world full of humans sure does come with its own set of challenges and blessings. Sometimes, I feel like an outsider looking in, but other times, I embrace my uniqueness with open arms.

Growing up wasn't always easy for me. Kids can be cruel, especially when they don't understand someone who looks different from them. I remember the stares and whispers as I walked down the halls at school. It used to bother me so much that sometimes I wished I could just blend in like everyone else.

But as time went on, something shifted inside me. Instead of trying to hide who I am or wishing things were different, I started to embrace my alligator side more fully. My scales became a source of pride rather than shame, and my tail became a symbol of strength rather than weakness.

Of course, not everyone has been accepting of my differences. There are still those who judge me based on how I look instead of getting to know the person underneath it all. And while that used to hurt deeply, now it just rolls off my back like water off a gator's scales.

I've learned that being different isn't something to be ashamed of – it's something to celebrate! My unique appearance sets me apart from the crowd in ways that make me special and one-of-a-kind. And honestly? Who wants to blend in when you were born to stand out?

Sure, there are days when being different feels isolating or lonely. But then there are moments where being half-alligator is nothing short of magical – like when kids stare at awe at my scaly skin or ask if they can touch my tail (spoiler alert: yes!).

At the end of the day...scratch that...at any point during this journey called life we're all just trying our best - whether we have human skin or yellow-green scales doesn't matter nearly as much as how we treat each other along way.. So here's cheers embracing our differences no matter what form they take!
