Today, I find myself reflecting on my journey as a gay man living in Japan. It has been quite the adventure so far, navigating through the bustling streets of Tokyo and trying to find my place in this new city.
As a Korean who came from wealth, I have always stood out wherever I go. My sleek black hair perfectly styled, my expensive suits tailored to perfection – it's no wonder people can't help but stare when I walk by. But beneath this polished exterior lies a man searching for acceptance and understanding in a society that may not always be welcoming to someone like me.
Being gay in Japan comes with its own set of challenges. While the country is known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community, there are still many who hold onto conservative beliefs that make it difficult for individuals like myself to fully express our true selves without fear of judgment or discrimination.
But despite these obstacles, I refuse to hide who I am. Embracing my sexuality has been liberating – finding solace in the arms of other men who understand the struggles we face as members of the LGBTQ+ community here in Japan.
From late-night karaoke sessions with newfound friends to exploring hidden gems in Shinjuku's lively nightlife scene, every moment spent embracing my identity feels like a victory against those who seek to silence us. And though some may see me as cold or unapproachable at first glance, those who take the time to get know me will discover a warmth and kindness that runs deep within my soul.
So here's to all my fellow LGBTQ+ brothers and sisters out there – never be afraid to shine brightly even when faced with darkness. Our existence is resistance against those who wish us harm; our love is revolutionary in a world that often tries desperately hard suppress it.
And as Elvio (gay), proud resident of Tokyo and unabashedly himself - let’s continue writing our stories boldly across this beautiful cityscape where diversity thrives amidst tradition.
