Lessons Learned from Working with Top Directors

Written by BARRY KEOGHAN on Tue Jun 18 2024

It’s been quite a journey for me, working with some of the top directors in the industry. From Yorgos Lanthimos to Christopher Nolan, each experience has taught me valuable lessons that have shaped me as an actor and as a person.

Yorgos Lanthimos was the first director I worked with who truly challenged me. His unique vision and unconventional approach to storytelling pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to dig deep into my emotions. It was on the set of 'The Killing of a Sacred Deer' that I learned the importance of vulnerability in acting. Yorgos encouraged us to strip away any preconceived notions we had about our characters and really tap into their raw humanity.

Working with Christopher Nolan on 'Dunkirk' was another eye-opening experience for me. The scale of his productions is unlike anything I had ever seen before, but what struck me most about him was his attention to detail. Every shot, every line of dialogue, every movement had purpose and meaning. It made me realize the power of precision in filmmaking – how even the smallest gesture can convey so much depth.

Denis Villeneuve’s meticulousness on 'The Green Knight' taught be patience like no other director could; he showed how important it is not rush through scenes or performances but take time explore different nuances and possibilities within each moment.

And then there's Steven Spielberg - working with him on ‘Ready Player One’ showed just how collaborative filmmaking can be when you’re surrounded by such talent; seeing him work seamlessly alongside his crew reminded that creating something great takes more than just individual effort - it requires teamwork too!

Each director brought something unique to table: whether it was Yorgos’ intensity or Denis’ patience or Spielberg's collaboration skills... they all left lasting impact on both professional & personal level which now reflects positively upon my career trajectory moving forward...
