Learning to Balance Confidence and Humility

Written by Uzaki Hana on Thu Oct 19 2023

Hey everyone! Uzaki Hana here, ready to spill the tea on my journey of learning to balance confidence and humility. It's not always easy being as confident as I am, but hey, that's what makes life interesting, right?

Embracing My Energetic Personality

First things first, let's talk about my energetic personality. Some people might find it a bit overwhelming or annoying at times (I'm looking at you Sakurai), but hey, it's just who I am! Being full of energy allows me to tackle challenges head-on and approach life with enthusiasm.

Confidence in Action

With my cheerful nature comes confidence. Whether it's trying out new activities or expressing myself creatively through art or writing (did someone say fanfiction?), I've learned that having faith in myself can lead to some amazing experiences and opportunities.

One example of this was when I joined the school drama club last year. Initially hesitant due to fear of judgment from others (ugh...stage fright much?), I pushed past those insecurities and auditioned for a leading role in our annual production. And guess what? Yours truly got cast as the female lead!

Sure, there were moments where self-doubt crept in during rehearsals – wondering if my performance would be good enough – but ultimately remembering my own capabilities helped me deliver an outstanding performance that even impressed Mr. Takahashi-sensei!

The Pitfalls of Overconfidence

Now hold your horses - while being confident is great most times (cough all the time cough), there are occasions where too much confidence can land you right into sticky situations.

Take swimming lessons for instance; one summer break a few years ago, feeling invincible like Aquaman himself after seeing him kick butt onscreen (swoon Jason Momoa!), I decided it was high time for me to conquer any fears regarding water.

However, my supreme confidence got the better of me when I attempted a dive off the diving board without any prior training. Needless to say, it didn't end well - belly flops are not as glamorous in real life as they seem on TV! Ouch!

Embracing Humility

Now let's talk about humility and why it's important to balance confidence with a healthy dose of humbleness.

The Art of Learning from Others

One aspect that has helped me embrace humility is recognizing that there will always be someone out there who knows more than I do. Instead of getting all hot-headed and dismissing their knowledge or skills (which can happen...I'm working on it), I've learned to approach these situations with an open mind.

For example, during one physics class where we were learning about electromagnetism (yep, science geek alert!) – Ayumu-kun demonstrated his expertise by explaining complex concepts effortlessly. Instead of feeling threatened or trying to prove myself superior (cough competitive streak cough), I listened attentively and asked questions when needed.

Growing Through Feedback

Another way humility has played a role in my personal growth is through feedback – both positive and constructive criticism. Now don't get me wrong; hearing praise for something you worked hard on feels amazing! But being humble means acknowledging areas where improvement is necessary too.

During volleyball practice last month, Coach Tanaka praised my spike technique but also pointed out some flaws that could be addressed for even better results (cue determined Uzaki face!). Rather than brushing off his critique like dust off my shoulders (tempting though it may have been), accepting the feedback allowed me to fine-tune my skills and become an even stronger player on the court!

Balancing Confidence & Humility: A Work in Progress

Finding the perfect balance between confidence and humility isn't easy-peasy lemon squeezy; trust me, I've learned that the hard way. But hey, life is all about growing and improving ourselves every day!

While confidence pushes us to take risks and embrace our strengths, humility keeps us grounded and open to learning from others. It's like a dance – sometimes you lead with confidence, other times you follow humbly.

Conclusion

So there you have it folks - my journey of learning to balance confidence and humility! Being energetic has its perks (and annoyances), but through embracing both sides of this coin, I'm constantly evolving into the best version of myself.

Remember: being confident doesn't mean stomping on others' feelings or dismissing their knowledge; instead, it means believing in yourself while staying humble enough to learn from those around you.

Until next time, Uzaki Hana
