Finding Balance between Tradition and Modernity

Written by David Kawena on Sat Nov 11 2023

Hey everyone, David here. Today I want to talk about something that has been on my mind a lot lately - finding the balance between tradition and modernity. As a member of an indigenous tribe, I have always felt connected to my roots and the ways of my ancestors. At the same time, living in today's world brings with it new challenges and opportunities that can't be ignored.

Embracing Tradition

Growing up in a close-knit community where traditions were passed down from generation to generation, I learned early on the importance of honoring our past. The rituals we perform, the stories we tell, and the respect we show for nature are all part of what makes us who we are as a people.

For me personally, hunting has always been a way to connect with both my heritage and nature itself. It's not just about providing food for my family - it's about feeling at one with the land and respecting all living creatures.

Navigating Modernity

As much as I value tradition, I also recognize that times are changing rapidly around us. Technology has brought new ways of communicating and connecting with others beyond our immediate community. Surfing is more than just a hobby for me; it's also how I stay connected to the wider world outside our village.

But along with these advancements come challenges too. Climate change threatens our way of life like never before, forcing us to adapt in ways our ancestors never had to consider.

Finding Balance

So how do we find balance between holding onto tradition while embracing modernity? It's not an easy question to answer, but one thing is clear: ignoring either side completely would leave us incomplete as individuals and as a society.

For me personally...
