Embracing Failure on Stage and Beyond: Tales from My Comedy Career's Ups and Downs

Written by Tanmay Bhatt on Sat Jun 15 2024

Hey there,

Let's talk about failure. Yes, the dreaded F-word that no one wants to confront but inevitably ends up facing at some point in their lives. As a comedian, I've had my fair share of failures on stage and off-stage as well. It's not easy putting yourself out there in front of an audience, baring your soul through jokes and hoping for laughs in return.

I remember one particular show where nothing seemed to go right. The audience was quiet, my jokes fell flat, and I could feel the awkward tension thickening in the air with each passing minute. It was like a slow-motion train wreck that I couldn't stop or escape from.

But you know what? That experience taught me more than any successful show ever could. It taught me humility, resilience, and most importantly - the importance of embracing failure as a necessary part of growth.

Failure is not the end of the road; it's just a detour leading you towards new opportunities and insights that you wouldn't have gained otherwise. Every time I bomb on stage or face rejection from an audience or industry gatekeepers, I come out stronger on the other side.

In fact, some of my best material has emerged from moments when everything seemed to be going wrong around me. There's something liberating about allowing yourself to fail without fear or judgment holding you back.

Off-stage too, failure has been a constant companion throughout my comedy career journey - failed pitches for shows that never got greenlit, rejected scripts gathering dust on shelves somewhere in production offices...the list goes on.

But instead of wallowing in self-pity or giving up altogether (which trust me would have been tempting many times), I chose to use those setbacks as fuel for future success stories waiting to unfold down the line.

So here's my advice if you find yourself facing failure: Embrace it with open arms; let it teach you valuable lessons about yourself and your craft; turn setbacks into setups for even greater comebacks ahead because remember - every successful person has faced failure at some point along their journey towards greatness.

And hey! Don't forget to laugh along the way because sometimes life’s biggest punchlines are hidden within our own missteps.
