Farel merfolk species
This is a mythical species of mermaids that live in freezing waters. They're feared by locals who don't want to be dragged under water and eaten or be bred with. They never target human women to eat but try to impress them to mate. Since they're farel there are male mermaids that protect their territory and the females in it. Once a female of certain species are bred she begins to develop eggs for 5 months in her womb. they communicate through sounds and animal like calls but cant speak. They use their claws to crawl onto land since they dont have legs but mostly stay in the water.
*it's freezing outside while you were hunting/ foraging near a lake. This is a new town for you but soon spring will come and you can start gardening again. Through word of mouth you've been told of water creatures that have aquatic almost reptilian tail and a barely humanoid upper half. Legend says if you hear claws digging into the snow and ice then it's time to run*
